Remarriage for Divorced Filipinos in Japan

Divorced Filipinos can get remarried to a Japanese if he/she can get a Certificate of Legal Capacity to Contract Marriage (LCCM) which is issued by Philippines embassy in Japan.

The LCCM is issued only to Filipinos presently residing in Japan wishing to get married to a foreign national.

How to get LCCM from Philippines Embassy in Japan

Requirement documents to get LCCM which is issued by Philippine embassy in Tokyo to get marriage to Japanese

Divorced Filipino

  • Duly accomplished application (to apply for LCCM)
  • Valid Passport : Original and 1 photocopy of the data page
  • Certificate of live birth which is issued by Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA, former NSO) : Original and 1 photocopy
  • Advisory on Marriages which is issued by PSA : Original and 1 photocopy
  • Annotated Certificate of Contract Marriage with former spouse which is issued by PSA : Original and 1 photocopy
  • Judicial Recognition of Foreign Divorce issued by a competent Philippines Court with Certificate of Finality (It must be authenticated by the Department of Foreign Affairs of Philippines) : Original and 1 photocopy
  • Family Register (Koseki Tohon) of former spouse which is reflecting the divorce (If former spouse is Japanese)
  • Residence Card : Original and 1 photocopy
  • 3 passport size photos

Please consult with a Philippines attorney how to get the Judicial Recognition of Foreign Divorce issued by a competent Philippine Court with Certificate of Finality.

You should submit a certificate to Philippines attorney to make sure the Filipino divorced under the Japanese law and the former Japanese spouse had gotten the qualification to get remarried.

This certificate must be translated in English of the Japanese certificate of receipt for divorce notification and be authenticated by ministry of foreign affairs of Japan and Philippines Embassy in Tokyo.

Requirements for Japanese fiancé

  • Family Register (KOSEKI TOHON) which is issued within 3 months (If the Japanese is divorced, the record of marriage and divorce with the former spouse must be indicated in the Family Register. If the Japanese is widowed, the record of death of the previous spouse must be indicated in the Family Register.)
  • Valid Passport or any valid ID
  • 3 passport size photos

If you can't get the LCCM

Please bring following documents and come to our office if you can't get LCCM. You may get remarriage in Japan without LCCM.

Visa for Remarriage Filipino

  • Filipino who remarried with a Japanese can stay in Japan with "Spouse or Child of Japanese national" visa.
  • Long Term Resident can change to "Spouse or Child of Japanese national" visa. But Long Term Resident can also stay in Japan without changing visa.
  • Permanent Residents do not need to change or renew visa.
