The status of residence for a foreigner to manage a company in Japan is “Business Manager “. The activity that the foreigners can engage in as a business manager under the “Business Manager ” visa status is to manage business in Japan. The criteria for “Business Manager ” are as follows. If you have 70 or more Highly Skilled Professional points (Business Management), you can apply for “Highly Skilled Professional i (c) ” status.

  • The eligibility of the ”Business Manager” visa shall be suitable business scale and secure independent business facilities in Japan.
  • Employ one or more full-time employees. “Full-time employees” are limited to Japanese nationals, special permanent residents, and foreign nationals residing in Japan with the following residence status: “Permanent Resident”, “Spouse or Child of Japanese National”, “Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident” or “Long-Term Resident”.
  • The company must have capital of 30 million yen or more.
  • Either the applicant or a full-time employee must have a considerable level of Japanese language proficiency.
  • The applicant must have a doctorate, master’s or professional degree in a field related to the technology or knowledge necessary for business management or the operation of the business pertaining to the application or must have at least three years of experience in business management or administration.

Change of Status of Residence

  • You can apply for "Change of Status of Residence" by yourself if you have been staying Japan on another kind of visa such as working or student.
  • Immigration lawyer can attend to the immigration bureau as an application agent of yours to apply for "Change of Status of Residence".

Extension of Period of Stay

  • You can apply for ”Extension of Period of Stay” during 3 months before of the date of expiry until the expiry date of the current ”Business Manager” visa.
  • Immigration lawyer can attend to the immigration bureau as a proxy of yours to apply for ”Extension of Period of Stay”.

  • "Certificate of Authorized Employment" shall take another 1,600 yen for revenue stamp (for online applications).
  • It shall take extra charges except application for Tokyo regional immigration bureau or Yokohama district immigration office such as transportation charges and daily allowance (except online application).
  • "Application for permission to engage in an activity other than that permitted under the status of residence" will be accepted if the application is made at the same time as the "application for extension of period of stay".
  • Extraordinary cases shall take extra charges.
