Procedure for Japanese descent (Nikkei) VISA
Japanese descents must be recognized by Minister of justice to live in Japan on status of residence. They must be recognized by the Minister of justice to extend the period of stay that there is appropriate reason to renew.
The applicants must attend to at the regional immigration bureau to submit application form and so on. The applicant's legal representative or relative can also atted to at the Regional Immigration Bureau as a proxy of applicant's.

Certificate of Eligibility
- Relatives of Japanese descent (Nikkei) residing in Japan may submit an application for ”Certificate of Eligibility” to the Regional Immigration Office in Japan on behalf of the Nikkei as a representative applicant. A guarantor is also required to apply for the ”Certificate of Eligibility”. The representative applicant of relative can also serve as the guarantor. If the representative applicant is relative and another person is guarantor, the guarantor does not have to be relative.
- Japanese descents who don't have a relative in Japan can apply for ”Certificate of Eligibility” to a regional Immigration office in Japan while they are visiting in Japan on ”Temporary visitor” visa. A guarantor residing in Japan is required but the guarantor does not have to be a relative.
- After the ”Certificate of Eligibility” was approved, the Japanese descent need to apply for VISA to entry into Japan for the Japanese embassy or Japanese consulate of general in their home country.
Change of Status of Residence
- Japanese descents who are living in Japan on other status of residence may apply for ”Change of Status of Residence” to the regional Immigration bureau.
- Japanese descents come to Japan with ”Temporary Visitor” visa and will continue to live in Japan, they can apply for ”Change of Status of Residence” to Japanese descent visa only if there are special circumstances.
- ”Certificate of Eligibility” as Japanese descent has been issued while staying in Japan on ”Temporary Visitor” visa, Japanese descents can apply for ”Change of Status of Residence” to Japanese descent visa.
Extension of Period of Stay
- Japanese descents who are living in Japan on the Japanese descent Visa can apply for ”Extension of Period of Stay” during 3 months before the date of expiry until the expiry date of current VISA.
Permission to Acquire Status of Residence
- Children of Japanese descent (1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation) who is residing in Japan have been born in Japan and will stay in Japan for 60 days or more, they must apply for ”Permission to Acquire Status of Residence” within 30 days after the birth.
- If a person of Japanese descent acquires a non-Japanese nationality, and loses his/her Japanese nationality, and wishes to stay in Japan for more than 60 days, he/she must apply for permission to acquire resident status within 30 days.
- Japanese descent Americans residing in SOFA status (1st, 2nd, 3rd generation) have lost their SOFA and stay in Japan for more than 60 days, they must apply for ”Permission to Acquire Status of Residence” within 30 days.

- It shall take extra charges except application for Tokyo regional immigration bureau or Yokohama district immigration office such as transportation charges and daily allowance (except online application).
- ”Change of status of residence” from ”Temporary Visitor” visa is not subject to online application. Revenue stamp is 6,000 yen.
- The amount of fees for simultaneous applications applies to the same status of residence and the same application types.
- Extraordinary cases shall take extra charges.
