Family Visas for Children

There is no actual visa type called the “Family visa “. However this website will provide information on the status of residence of family members of foreigners residing in Japan other than a “Spouse visa “as the “Family visa “.

Status of residence for Family Visas

Depending on the status of residence of the parent residing in Japan, each child receiving support in Japan falls under the following status of residence.

Children who fall under the status of residence of "Dependent"

  • Children who are supported by parents staying in Japan with Work Visas such as "Engineer / Specialist in Humanity / International Services", "Skilled Labor", "Intra-company Transferee" and so on.
  • Children who are supported by parents staying in Japan with status of residence of "Business Manager" and "Highly Skilled Professional i (c)".
  • Children who are supported by parents staying in Japan with status of residence of "Student" (Graduated students, University students, Vocational school students).

Children who fall under status of residence of "Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident"

  • Children of Permanent Residents who was born in Japan (Acquisition for status of "Permanent Residence" is also possible)

Children who fall under status of residence of "Long Term Resident"

  • Children of Permanent Resident who was born out of Japan
  • Step-children who are biological and unmarried minor of spouse of Japanese national, spouse of Permanent Resident and spouse Long Term Resident
  • Fourth generation of Japanese descent who are biological and unmarried minor of Long Term Resident
  • Minor, unmarried biological children (dependent on the parent) who are residing with status of "Dependent", whose parent who was residing with Work Visas status has changed his/her status to status of "Permanent Residence"
  • Children who are under 18 years old at the time of entry to Japan, have completed compulsory education (elementary and junior high school) in Japan, are staying in Japan with status of "Dependent", and wish to find a job in Japan
  • Children who has been residing in Japan for more than 5 years (including the period during which he/she received education at a university or vocational school) with status of "Designated Activity" for the purpose of employment.

Children who fall under status of residence of "Designated Activity"

  • Children who are under 18 years old at the time of entry to Japan, has graduated (or is expected to graduate) from a Japanese high school (however, if the child has been transferred to a high school, the child must have Japanese language skills equivalent to JLPT N2 in addition to graduation), and is staying in Japan with a status of “Dependent” with the parent as guarantor, and wishes to find a job in Japan.

  • The contingency fee is payment to the lawyer, so that you have been succeeded in getting permission.
  • "Extension of Period of Stay" shall take another 5,500 yen for revenue stamp (in case of online application).
  • "Change of Status of Residence" shall take 5,5000 yen for revenue stamp (in case of oneline application).
  • Status of "Permanent Residence” shall take another 10,000 yen for revenue stamp
  • It shall take extra charges except application for Tokyo regional immigration bureau or Yokohama district immigration office such as transportation charges and daily allowance (except online application).
  • Extraordinary cases shall take extra charges.
